Why we think Tobi Lütke is a Type 5
Self-taught coder from a young age. Lütke's interest in programming began when he received a computer from his parents at the age of six. He taught himself programming as a result of his deep curiosity for how the computer worked primarily through online resources and experimentation.
Reclusiveness in pursuit of technical knowledge. In an interview with Tim Ferriss about how he built Shopify from the ground up and turned it into a leading e-commerce platform, Lütke mentioned that he would spend significant amounts of time alone, learning, and tinkering with computers. He has mentioned that he enjoys spending time alone to think, reflect, and recharge.
Analytical and intellectual approach. Lütke emphasizes the data and is very focused on using systematic processes to drive his decision making.
Demeanor. In interviews and public appearances, Lütke comes across as thoughtful, introspective, and intellectual.
“A learning company that happens to do retail.” Lütke used this phrase to describe Shopify, showing his thirst for knowledge and his prioritization of learning over business.
