Why we think Tim Burton is a Type 5

• Creative eccentricity. Burton has consistently displayed a strong interest in exploring unconventional themes and styles throughout his career. His artistic style is incredibly unique and recognizable, featuring dark, Gothic, and whimsical elements. His work in films like "Beetlejuice," "Edward Scissorhands," and "The Nightmare Before Christmas" demonstrate these themes. 

• Fascination with the macabre. Throughout his career, Burton has shown a fascination with dark and macabre themes. For example, his film "Corpse Bride" revolves around the story of a man who accidentally marries a deceased bride.

• Isolation in relationships. In Burton’s relationship with Helena Bonham Carter, the couple lived in separate houses, connected by a hallway, which suggests a preference for personal space and isolation even in intimate relationships.

• Refusal to compromise on his artistic vision. Early in his career, Burton faced rejection from Disney, as his style did not fit their traditional animation approach. Instead of conforming, he pursued his own unique artistic vision. 

• Pursuit of mastery. His creative process often involves extensive research, planning, and immersion in the subject matter. In making the film "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" (2007), Burton spent months researching the original play, Stephen Sondheim's musical, and Victorian London in which the story was set. He didn't just accept previous interpretations of the piece but dove deep into the source material, collaborating with Sondheim, to ensure a thorough understanding. He even spent time exploring London's history, architecture, and infamous characters of the era to properly portray the dark and grimy feel of the city as realistically as possible. 

• Reclusive working style. Burton has mentioned in interviews that he enjoys working alone. In an interview with The Talks, he stated, "I feel much more comfortable when I’m alone. When I was a kid and went to parties, I’d spend the time in the corner with the family dog. I’ve always liked the perspective of looking on." 

• Emotional detachment in storytelling. Many of Burton's films, such as "Edward Scissorhands" and "Corpse Bride," which also have autobiographical elements, feature protagonists who are emotionally detached or isolated from the world around them. 

• Eccentric personal style. Burton has mentioned that he feels weird and likes to be weird. He  is known for his signature look, often wearing black clothing, sunglasses, and sporting disheveled hair. This personal style further emphasizes his eccentricity.
