Why we think Carlos Ghosn is a Type 3

  • Ambition and drive. Ghosn became known as "Le Cost Killer" and "Mr. Fix It" after he was credited with turning around Nissan, which was on the verge of bankruptcy when he joined the company. He introduced the Nissan Revival Plan in October 1999, with the ambitious aim of returning the company to profitability within a year, a goal which was achieved ahead of schedule.

  • The "Ghosn Method." Ghosn was known for his meticulous and rigorous management style, The "Ghosn Method" focused on aggressive cost-cutting, strict targets, and clear responsibility, all indicative of the efficiency-oriented and results-focused nature of a Type 3.

  • Demeanor. He has a professional and focused presence. His demeanor reflects strong self-confidence, gravitas, and a clear command of the subjects he is discussing.

  • Adaptability. Ghosn, born in Brazil, raised in Lebanon, and educated in France, successfully led companies in Japan and France, demonstrating an impressive adaptability across different cultures and business environments. He was willing to do whatever it took to succeed, including working incredibly long hours and regularly traveling between Japan and France to manage both Nissan and Renault.

  • Bold moves in pursuit of success. When Ghosn joined Nissan, it was a bold step, as failure could have seriously damaged his career. At that time (1999), the company was incurring massive losses and was on the brink of bankruptcy. Even though it was a risky gamble for his career, the potential for glory and the possibility of leaving his mark, made this an attractive opportunity for him.

  • Public persona and image. Ghosn often presented himself as a symbol of globalization, and he made sure that he was perceived as a leader who was cosmopolitan and adaptable. He was known to maintain a professional and controlled image in public appearances.

  • Image maintenance. Despite the legal charges against him for financial misconduct, Ghosn attempted to control the narrative around his case. After he escaped from Japan (which he did in very dramatic fashion while he was on bail awaiting trial), he held an internationally broadcast press conference in Lebanon and participated in a documentary about the escape.
