Why we think Sally Field is a Type 2

  • Desire for love and affection. Her famous Oscar acceptance speech in 1985, where she said, "You like me, right now, you like me!" illustrates her desire for love and affirmation.

  • Nurturing roles that express her nurturing quality. In her acting career, Sally Field has often portrayed nurturing and compassionate characters, such as her roles in "Forrest Gump," "Steel Magnolias," and "Places in the Heart.”

  • Emphasis on empathy and supporting others. During the 2017 Women's March, she spoke about the importance of empathy in understanding one another. She has supported organizations like Vital Voices and the American Foundation for Equal Rights and has advocated for LGBTQ+ rights and mental health awareness.

  • Prioritizing others over herself. In 1977, Sally Field won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in "Norma Rae," but she chose not to attend the ceremony. Instead, she joined Burt Reynolds at the Florida dinner theater called "The Burt Reynolds Jupiter Theatre," where Reynolds held a mock Oscar night. At this event, Reynolds handed Sally Field a homemade Oscar, affectionately called a "Burtie." The two actors were close friends and shared an intimate relationship during that period, and Field chose to prioritize supporting him over attending her own ceremony.

  • Difficulty setting boundaries. In her memoir, "In Pieces," Sally Field described her challenging relationship with her stepfather and how she struggled to set boundaries, even when it meant suppressing her own feelings and desires. She also talked about how in her relationship with Burt Reynoalds, she found it difficult to set boundaries in that she offered him continuous emotional support when he was addicted to painkillers and other unhealthy behaviors, even though it made it difficult for her to maintain her own mental health.

  • Struggling with self-worth. Throughout her life and career, Sally Field has struggled with self-worth, often feeling as though she needed to prove herself or earn love and respect from others (this is also indicative of her 3 Wing).

Sally Field quotes that show she is a Type 2

  • "I've always been a caretaker; that's my nature. That's who I am."

  • "I was always a pleaser. I always wanted everyone to like me."

  • “I can't deny the fact that you like me! You like me!”

  • "It took me a long time not to judge myself through someone else's eyes" (which also is indicative of her 3 Wing)

  • "I was raised to sense what someone wanted me to be and be that kind of person" (which also is indicative of her 3 Wing).

  • "Our job is to love people. When it hurts. When it's awkward. When it's uncool and embarrassing."
