LEVELS OF CONSCIOUSNESS
The Levels of Consciousness measure how clearly we can see reality as it is, including our own motives and shortcomings. The more we’re caught in our habitual fears and our need for validation, the less clearly we see. The more we can step back from those patterns and act from the natural goodness and wisdom beneath them, the clearer our view becomes. Two people of the same Type can be very different depending on their Level of Consciousness. It is this dimension that makes the Enneagram so valuable. Our Type reveals our patterns, but the Levels of Consciousness show us how to grow beyond them and become our best.
There are three Levels of Consciousness.
Creative Consciousness: Serving and Growing
The state of mind where we are free to be who we are and make the best decisions by seeing the many possible options before intentionally aligning with what will best serve others and our true self. At this Level, we are most aware of our ego and its controlling tendencies, and we do our best not to play into them. We accept our limitations with compassion, and we understand that our worth doesn’t depend on being right, strong, or successful. We call this Level creative not in the artistic sense, but because even in difficult moments we can see choices beyond our habitual reactions. It isn’t easy. It means walking against the current of our ego. But it is the most fulfilling way to live.
Controlling Consciousness: Proving and Defending
The most common experience we have in life, characterized by conscious or unconscious neediness where we put ourselves first and employ all our unique, habitual strategies to make the world tell us we are who we think we should be. At this Level, we are controlled by our ego, and we try to control the people and circumstances around us to get the validation it craves. This control can be subtle and hidden behind good intentions, even from ourselves, so there is a gap between what we do and what we think we’re doing. Life here can look very good from the outside, and our culture often admires and rewards it. Yet conflict and insecurity are never far away.
Destructive Consciousness: Attacking and Isolating
The zone of complete self-absorption, shut down and closed off to the world by the pain of not being seen as we think we should be, and suffering so much that we’re determined to harm others or ourselves until things change. At this Level, the ego is so desperate for validation that it no longer cares what it costs anyone else. We grow angry, cynical, and dismissive, blaming the world for failing to give us what we deserve. As lonely as we feel, we isolate ourselves even more. None of us is immune: we all dip here when we lose control under stress, and if enough goes wrong in our lives, our destructive side can emerge. Recognizing that potential early is part of the work.
Moving Between the Levels
Two fears mark the boundaries. The Shock Point Fear, that we’re not doing enough to be what our Type longs to be, pulls us from Creative into Controlling. The Red Flag Fear, that we can never be it, pulls us from Controlling into Destructive. Recognizing these fears for what they are is how we stop the slide.
Our teachers Don Riso and Russ Hudson describe our usual Level as a peg on a pegboard, with a rubber band that stretches up and down with our moods. Good moments stretch the band, but they don’t move the peg. Growth begins when we honestly find ourselves in the lower Levels of Consciousness and take relentless responsibility for what we find.
