The Ego and the Self

As we close out the year, we want to return to the backbone of all that we do at Upbuild: the distinction between the ego and the self.

We define the ego as the identity of who we think we should be. We define the self as who we actually are beneath the layers of ego. The deepest coaching makes this distinction clear in lived experience, not just in concept.

Coaching brings awareness to the subtle ways we prove and defend our ego identities. In proving and defending, we lose connection to who we truly are. The work of coaching, then, is noticing the ego as it operates in real time.

That awareness opens the door to choice, authenticity, and greater freedom. It supports progress on the most meaningful journey there is: the journey from ego to true self.

Coaching application. Notice when your client is subtly proving or defending an identity. Invite them to pause and explore what might be more authentic to who they are than that identity.

Life application. What is one ego identity holding you back from being connected to your true self in your life right now? What is one small step you could take to act less from that identity, and more aligned with the true self?
