Beginning Powerfully

The beginning of a coaching session is a powerful moment of transition. It marks the shift from the noise of daily life into a space of focused presence, intention, and possibility. Coaching sessions are not “normal” conversations. They are sacred containers for exploration and growth. The way we begin matters. When we start with clarity and purpose, we set the tone for depth, insight, and transformation. Our role as coaches is to help clients step into that space by inviting them to lead with what is alive for them. A strong beginning does not just anchor the session; it empowers the client.

Tips to begin sessions powerfully:

  • Avoid too much chit-chat at the beginning

  • Train clients to step in with what they want to focus on

  • Get the Presenting Agenda, which includes both the topic and the desired outcome as it relates to the topic

Questions to help you begin a session powerfully:

  • What would you like to focus on today?

  • What would be valuable to explore?

  • What do you need to say about the accountability from our previous session?

  • What would you like to have at the end of our session that you don’t have right now?

Coaching application: Begin each session this week in a powerful way.

Life application: Before a meaningful conversation with a friend or partner, pause and ask yourself: What do I want to talk about? What would I like to have by the end of this conversation?
