Upbuild Coaching Bits: Serve Not Fix
“Serve not Fix” is one of the meta-skills of Upbuild coaching. It means that we focus on the person’s overall being, personal growth, and inner experience rather than just addressing specific issues or challenges they present. When we honor this meta-skill, we engage with people from a belief that they are inherently resourceful and not in need of fixing.
As coaches (or parents, managers, etc.), when we let go of our ego’s compulsion to solve problems, we are better able to serve. When we empower others to do the work themselves, they gain far more than if we offer them answers. Imagine walking shoulder-to-shoulder with the person you are trying to serve, supporting them on their journey without trying to direct them.
Coaching application: Ponder the question: What’s possible for my clients if I let go of my need to have the answer?
Life application: Pick an important relationship in your life where you tend to do a lot of “fixing.” What do you need to let go of in order to “serve not fix?” Commit to honoring this meta-skill in all of your interactions with this person over the next week. Write a sticky-note reminder for yourself.
