Imposter Syndrome

Imposter syndrome isn’t just the fear that we’re not good enough. It’s the fear that we’re not who we think we should be.

At Upbuild, we see imposter syndrome as a sign that the ego is in charge. The ego builds a version of who we should be (successful, competent, admired, etc.), and when our lived experience doesn’t match that image, the Inner Critic shows up with doubts:

  • Am I really qualified for this role?

  • What if people find out I’m not as good as they think?

  • Do I actually deserve this success or praise?

These questions don’t go away with pep talks or achievements.

As coaches, we help clients see the ego’s grip, not to shame them, but to invite honesty. Imposter syndrome thrives in isolation and distortion. The way through is to separate the truths from the distortions.

For example:

  • Truth: I’ve received a lot of help and mentorship in getting here.

  • Distortion: That means I don’t deserve this role.

Or another example:

  • Truth: There are areas I could grow in.

  • Distortion: I’m a fraud unless I’m the best in every area.

By helping clients slow down and look more closely, we can guide them to work with these voices compassionately and clearly.

Coaching application. In an upcoming session when you sense the client is experiencing imposter syndrome, invite them to name the truths and the distortions that are present in the Inner Critic’s message. And then ask them to reflect on what changes when they separate truth from distortion.

Life application. How are you experiencing imposter syndrome right now? Try writing out both the truths and the distortions underneath the fear.
