Championing
Championing is the practice of seeing and naming what is possible for someone, even when they can’t see it themselves. It is holding up a mirror that reflects not only where they are today but who they are becoming.
Unlike cheerleading, which can feel superficial or overly optimistic, championing is grounded in your real experience of the person. You know what they are capable of because you’ve watched them stretch, reflect, and grow. You are naming what you’ve witnessed and pointing them toward what you believe to be possible.
Examples of championing:
I have watched you do the hard thing over and over, and I know you can handle this challenge.
This new step is a big deal, and I have seen you take meaningful steps before in service of your learning and growth.
Your clarity today isn’t accidental. It’s built on all the work you have already done.
I want to acknowledge how much more self aware you are than when we began. That is why I trust your next move.
Coaching application. In your upcoming sessions, when you notice your client is doubting themselves or feeling stuck, reflect on who they are, name it clearly, and link it to what is possible now.
Life application. Think of someone in your life who is struggling or doubting themselves. Instead of offering advice, try championing them. Name something you genuinely admire in them and how you’ve seen it show up. Let them borrow your vision of their strength.
