10/80/10 “Rule”
The 10/80/10 “rule” is a simple yet powerful framework for structuring a coaching session. It proposes that:
The first 10% be used to establish the topic/focus of the coaching session and the desired outcome
The middle 80% be devoted to exploring the topic and deepening the client’s learning
The final 10% be used to set up action and future accountability
This approach helps ensure that sessions are balanced, purposeful, and transformational.
When a coach internally follows this flow, it provides a sense of rhythm and clarity that supports the client’s experience. The beginning invites clarity and presence, the middle holds the heart of the work, and the ending moves insight into impact. When we honor this structure, we’re better able to serve clients by keeping them focused, engaged, and moving forward.
Coaching application: Follow the 10/80/10 “rule” in all of your coaching sessions this week. Notice the impact on yourself and your clients.
Life application: Give yourself a 30-minute self-reflection window. Use the first 3 minutes to set a focus for your reflection, the next 24 to explore freely, and the last 3 to identify one next step.
