Why we think Thomas Edison is a Type 3

  • Intense work ethic. Edison had a reputation for being intensely focused. His relentless pursuit of his inventions resulted in a work schedule that spanned day and night, often at the expense of sleep. Edison is quoted as saying, "Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration," a testament to his belief in the value of hard work and determination.

  • Prolific inventor. Edison had 1,093 patents to his name. His productivity and desire to continually innovate demonstrate his focus on accomplishment and success.

  • Turning failure into success. Edison is known for his famous quote. "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." This reflects the Type 3's characteristic determination, optimism, and focus on achievement.

  • Image management. Edison was not just an inventor but also a savvy businessman. He was skilled in promoting his inventions and cultivating a public image as a genius inventor.

  • Competitiveness. Edison was known to be highly competitive, especially with other inventors of his time like Nikola Tesla and George Westinghouse. He had an intense desire to win in the "War of Currents." During this "War,” Edison engaged in a public relations campaign to promote his direct current (DC) system over the alternating current (AC) system. This included public demonstrations aimed at discrediting AC, showing a desire to command public attention and opinion.

  • Focus on efficiency. Edison is credited with the creation of the first industrial research laboratory, the Menlo Park lab. The lab's focus on organized, team-based research shows Edison's efficiency and his ability to streamline the invention process.

  • Deceit and image management. There are instances in Edison's life where he managed the truth to benefit his image. For example, he publicized a version of the electric light bulb when it was not fully functional yet, to win public support and discredit his competitors.

  • Public demonstrations. Edison often held public demonstrations of his inventions to generate excitement and attract attention. One famous example is his public lighting displays using his electric light system, which served to draw public attention and gain financial backing. He also engaged actively with the media to promote his inventions and maintain his image as a leading inventor. His relationships with journalists helped him maintain a high profile and shape public perception.
