Why we think Phil Knight is a Type 3

  • Workaholism. In his memoir Shoe Dog about how he created Nike and made it into one of the most successful businesses of all time, Knight shares that he dealt with burnout by working even harder.

  • Neglecting personal relationships. In Shoe Dog, Knight reveals that his intense focus on Nike's growth and success strained his relationships with his family, particularly his wife and children. He admits that he was often absent during crucial moments in their lives because he prioritized Nike’s valuation over these relationships.

  • Big vision and ability to pivot. Knight wrote a paper while attending Stanford Graduate School of Business outlining his vision for a company that would import high-quality, low-cost athletic shoes from Japan. He made this vision happen and then when that opportunity was no longer as attractive, he boldly made the pivot to designing and manufacturing Nike's own line of athletic footwear.

  • “Just do it” mentality. In the early days of Nike (originally known as Blue Ribbon Sports), Knight did whatever it took to make sure his vision could become a reality, including working as an accountant on the side to support his startup.

  • Focus on winning and being associated with winners. Knight revolutionized the advertising and endorsement world by being relentless in his pursuit of deals to get athletes such as Michael Jordan, Lebron James, and Serena Williams to become spokespeople for Nike.
