Why we think Annie Lennox is a Type 4

  • Emphasizing how she felt at different times in her life. In interviews, Lennox emphasizes that she felt a certain way at one point in her life and then a different way at another point, and then a different way in her current point in life. She is focused more on her inner experiences and how she felt rather than the external.

  • A focus on being original. In an interview (linked below), when questioned about creating covers, she gets defensive because of the lack of originality in playing other artists’ songs. She talks about needing to do covers in your own way.

  • Playing up uniqueness. Lennox was not shy about her unique style and artistic integrity. Her iconic androgynous look in the music video for "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" by Eurythmics showed her willingness to break from traditional expectations and assert her individuality. She talks about how she loved it when she stepped on stage and there was ambiguity about her identity and her sexuality (this is also indicative of her 3 Wing).

  • Source of inspiration. In speaking about her inspiration for writing and making music, she talks about sitting in the back of a cab and becoming introspective. It’s as if she goes into a dream world as she recounts her inspiration.

  • Focus on what's missing. Lennox's music has intense emotional depth and explores themes of love, loss, longing, dissatisfaction, and introspection. Her song "Into the West", featured in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, conveys a deep sense of longing and melancholy, reflecting on themes of loss and transition.

Annie Lennox quotes that show she is a Type 4

  • "Music is an extraordinary vehicle for expressing emotion - very powerful emotions. That's what draws millions of people towards it. And, um, I found myself always going for these darker places and - people identify with that."

  • "I would say that although my music may be or may have been part of the cultural background fabric of the gay community, I consider myself an outsider who belongs everywhere and nowhere... Being a human being is what truly counts. That's where you'll find me."

  • "Dying is easy, it's living that scares me to death."

  • "I don't think you can plan anything."

  • "I mean, I'm 48 years old and I've been through a lot in my life - you know, loss, whether it be death, illness, separation. I mean, the failed expectations... We all have dreams."

  • "The way I see it, you have to take every chance you get because there may not be another one. You have to learn from your mistakes because nobody's perfect. You have to laugh, love, and live every day as if it's your last." (this is indicative of her 3 Wing).

  • "When life seems to put out every light you have, it is better to light a candle than to complain about the darkness" (this is also indicative of her 3 Wing).

  • "The world is a mess. It seems that life gets harder on a personal level each and every day."
