Why we think Robin Williams is a Type 7

  • Demeanor. His demeanor was upbeat, enthusiastic, and engaging, which contributed to his magnetic stage presence. He was known for his ability to effortlessly shift from one character or emotion to another, which was a hallmark of his improvisational comedy. His rapid-fire wit and manic energy often left audiences enthralled and captivated.

  • Love for adventure and exploration. Williams often explored various characters and accents during his stand-up routines, showcasing his enthusiasm for new experiences and creative exploration.

  • Dominating talk show appearances. When Williams appeared as a guest on talk shows, he often stole the spotlight with his energetic and animated storytelling. He was very much in charge (which also speaks to his 8 Wing), while the interviewer was mostly along for the ride. 

  • Using humor during personal hardships. During difficult times, Williams often emerged on stage or on screen with an even more heightened and zestful sense of humor. His rehab experiences became material for his stand-up routines, showcasing his ability to use comedy as a coping mechanism.

  • Restless energy. Regardless of the situation, Williams always seemed to be in constant motion.

  • Portrayal of light-hearted characters. Throughout his career, Williams played optimistic and humorous roles, including , Mork on "Mork & Mindy," the voice of Genie in “Aladdin,” Mrs. Doubtfire in “Mrs. Doubtfire,” and Peter Pan in “Hook.”  (1978-1982). This role, which catapulted Williams to stardom, showcased his improvisational skills and zany humor.

  • Spontaneity and rapid pace. In his stand-up routines, Williams was known to jump from one topic to another, often without any clear connection between them.

  • Struggles with addiction. Williams's battles with substance abuse, such as alcohol and cocaine, were destructive ways of dealing with pain. In a 2010 interview with The Guardian, he mentioned that alcohol was "a way of calming the fears", referring to the internal struggles and worries he faced. On Marc Maron's podcast, "WTF", in 2010, he talked about how his drug and alcohol use provided a temporary solution and shield from painful emotions.
